The first earthworm species were mentioned from the territory of the Republic of Turkey by Rosa in 1893. From that time the knowledge of their biodiversity has been increasing but it is still with many gaps. At presents 75 species are known from Turkey, belonging into four families, and 22 genera. Twenty seven species are presumably endemic to Turkey. The most important centre of earthworm endemism are an uplifted parts of the Pontids tectonic plates, represented today mainly by the Karadeniz mountains in the northern Turkey, and less the Sakarya continent tectonic plate and the Levantine part of Turkey that is mostly on the Arabian tectonic plate. Pontids also share ancient earthworm genera together with the Balkans. In addition Pontids represent an important corridor of faunal exchange with Transcaucasus, and a possible source of colonization of Caucasus after its uplifting. Anatolia shares with Caucasus and the Levant adaptive species radiation possibly driven by climate driven change of wet forests to open park forests, and steppes, in a few earthworm genera.
