Earthworm fauna of Cyprus

Twenty-three earthworm species, representing the families Lumbricidae amd Acanthodrilidae, were reported from Cyprus so far. Out of them one (Perelia makrisi Szederjesi et al., 2016) is an endemic species for the island. The earthworm fauna is composed of 15 (65%) autochthonous species and 8 (35%) peregrine ones (Table 3).

Since the majority of earthworms migrated to the island from the Levant, it is possible to regard the fauna of Cyprus as a Levantine one.

Table 3. A summary table of the earthworms of Cyprus (Families Lumbricidae and Acanthodrilidae). (Abbreviations: A-species regarded as autochthonous ones, P-species regarded as peregrine ones).
